After-School Programs
St. John School of the Arts aim is to reach out to our youth, intervening through arts education during these impressionable formative years. Immersion in creativity, self-discipline and self-expression infuses the intellectual, social and psychological well being of our children. Numerous studies reveal arts education increases attention span, focus and cooperative learning, enhances creative intelligence, and augments scholastic learning.

Movement
Caribbean Movement
Cultural Dances are important to keep pieces of history alive. These courses offer the opportunity for students to learn about our musical culture and to increase knowledge of the dances. Classes will include oral discussions about the origin of quadrille dancing and how it became a part of Virgin Islands Culture.
Creative Movement & Tumbling
Students learn to love movement and explore multiple ways of moving around a space. Students learn ballet terminology and steps, stretches, and movements across the floor, while having fun. Students hear a mix of classical ballet music, and silly songs.

Students learn the structure of a traditional ballet class. Reinforce the Fundamentals of classical ballet, focusing on proper body alignment, basic ballet technique and terminology, and musicality…
Music
Guitar
Introduction to Guitar teaches basic guitar rhythm strumming using acoustic steel- string guitars in standard tuning. In this class we will learn and execute the open chord shapes and explore popular guitar strum patterns while engaging with contemporary, global guitar standards.
Traditional Drumming
Using historical folklore as a medium of expression, students will be introduced to basic/intermediate Afro–Caribbean drumming and dance forms…
Voice
Voice classes are taught with care for the developing voice with a focus on resonance breath control, intonation, development of high and low registers. Voice curriculum is comprised of both technique and application to a song in order to hone the students’ talents and prepare them for performance.
Violin

Ukulele
Skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing are developed in Mandarin Chinese or Patois. Students will learn to compose both written and spoken compositions.

Creative expression for the stage, using body, voice and imagination. Students will develop skills in characterization, realistic playing on stage, and emotional connection with a storyline. Class will include character-related theater games and basic techniques for vocal preparation and performance.
Fashion Design and Sewing

Private lessons
Private lessons with SJSA’s esteemed faculty are available in all disciplines. Private lessons are designed for students wanting to develop technique, hone in on their talent and/or build confidence.
Other Programs
In-School programs
Our in-school programs are offered to enhance the curriculum for both public and private schools and expand arts education. It also provides the opportunity for schoolchildren, K through 12th grade, to experience the arts that may not be fulfilled otherwise. The majority of the over 300 students who benefit from SJSA’s in-school programs are underserved young people. SJSA provides a total arts program giving students a diverse arts experience that is rich in Caribbean culture as well as classical instruction. Overall, classes in music, movement and art are expanded to include a deeper, more meaningful challenge for students, growing with each grade from pre-school to high school.

Summer Programs
St John School of the Arts offers several options for summer programming to keep children engaged. Annually we offer free Musical Theatre camp and Carnival Troupe, however each year there are other options ranging from Dance to Voice Camp to other productions. Be sure to check our website frequently for available offerings and to register.

The ASCAP Foundation
The ASCAP Foundation, a publicly supported charitable organization. The ASCAP Foundation was named the final beneficiary of all of Irving Caesar’s assets (copyrights), including those held under his lifetime trust and those retained in his wholly owned publishing company as well as his memorabilia.The ASCAP Foundation supports programs designed to ensure the preservation of the great Caesar legacy. These efforts include music education and musical theater programs in Irving Caesar’s name with the goal of providing enjoyable and meaningful music experience for young people with an emphasis on the economically disadvantaged.
