Throughout the year, SJSA holds special events promoting the arts and other arts related programs as an outreach source for the whole St. John community, our sister island friends and those who visit St. John.
Master Classes
The most rewarding experience for young artists is to meet with and study under a professional visual artist, musician or dancer. Master classes will be scheduled around after school classes and may be conducted on the weekend. All students are encouraged to participate.
SeminarNite
Our SeminarNite series was established to present studies that are not consistently taught on St. John. Classes have included, Women's Self-Defense, BellyDance, The Art of Chinese Medicine and Qigong. See schedule for upcoming classes.
Special Guest Artists
Music concerts, dance workshops and cultural events are just some of the special guests that SJSA hosts. See schedule below.
Young Writer's ScholarshipsSt. John School of the Arts is sponsoring our 2nd annual Young Writer’s Camp, founded and directed by Ms. Coreen Samuel, Monday - Friday, July 12 – July 30 from 8:30 – 3:00 for children ages 6 - 15.
The theme this year is Ecology focusing on Art, Poetry and Prose. The lead local artist on staff, Karen L. Samuel, specializes in drawings of nature. Students will learn how to: depict art themes from their writing; observe plants/animals; create forms of objects in nature; illustrate through a watercolor landscape that the sky touches the earth; and recognize the abstract nature of an object.
In addition, other contracted local artisans will provide instruction in traditional arts and crafts, music, dance and folklore, bringing poetry and art forms to life.
Led by VI National Park Education Guide Laurel Brannick, students will go on bird-watching field trips to study the native birds of the islands. Writing as a naturalist, sketching birds, sketching bird habitats, will be a focus of these trips. Students benefit by gaining a deeper appreciation for conserving the ecology that is, our Virgin Islands.
This three-week summer program is only $295. Scholarships are available. Don’t miss out on this opportunity that brings nature and our culture to light. Click below to download a registration form and a scholarship application form. Register early, space limited.
There will be a 30-minute orientation on the first day of the camp at 8:30 a.m. in the main building at St. John School of the Arts for parents and students.
